Bucks Camping for Families: Know Before You Go
Oh, the great outdoors!
There are few better ways to open your children’s eyes and awaken their senses to their natural environment than through camping. Whether it’s a star-speckled sky, the distant call of an owl, a tiny bug working in the dirt, or the taste of a freshly made s’more, the opportunities are endless for both you and your kids to become captivated by the joys of being in nature.
Taking the whole family out of their norm and into the wilderness can be a little daunting though. Especially if it’s your first time. Luckily for you, Bucks County is chock full of small, local family-friendly campgrounds so you don’t have to travel far for your first time out. Nor do you have to go without many of our modern world’s conveniences if you don’t want to.
Below, we’ve collected some of the best local campgrounds, recommended by local families. And make sure to check out our tips on camping with kids to make everyone’s camping experience enjoyable!
Tips for Camping With Kids
- Practice Camping at Home – Before venturing out, try pitching a tent in the backyard or even inside your home. Let them hang out in it and sleep in it so they become comfortable with a new sleeping environment.
- Involve Your Kids in the Process – To help them get excited about your trip, allow them to help with the packing and with researching activities near your campsite.
- Find the Right Campsite – Pick campgrounds with amenities that suit your family’s needs. Some campgrounds have ballfields, beaches or swimming areas, streams or rivers and playgrounds; others offer picnic tables, flushing toilets and hot showers.
- Stick to a Familiar Bedtime Routine – Kids love routine and sticking to theirs in a new and unfamiliar environment can bring them comfort. For babies, keep their sleeping habits as close to routine as possible (e.g., bring a portable white noise machine if you use one at home).
- Know what to pack – DEET-Free Bug spray, non-toxic mosquito patch stickers, first aid kits, long socks and extra layers will go a long way to ensuring everyone has a great experience!
- Think Safety – Talk to your kids before the trip and set boundaries before you get there. Will they need to take a buddy to the bathroom? Have a plan for if and when someone gets lost (you might want to give your kids a whistle and teach them how to blow it). Be aware of certain features at the campground that could be hazardous—wild animal sitings, a nearby road, a fast-moving stream, a steep bluff.
- Anticipate Challenges – Life is unpredictable, and even more so where kids and the outdoors are involved. Be prepared for a few bumps in the road and remember that’s all a part of the experience.

We love it because it’s close to home, is pretty small so generally quiet, and there are great hiking trails that lead to the Tinicum creek. The first time we went our youngest was 2 and he wouldn’t sleep so one of us took him home and the other stayed with our oldest.
