Turning Learning Into Adventure

When Laura Krantz’s second-graders walk into her classroom, they’re not just learning—they’re on an adventure. This year, that included a $1,010 grant-funded Local Government Day, which brought Middletown Township officials right to her students. The day ended with a mock town meeting, where students asked questions and explored local government roles firsthand.

“They loved it,” Laura says. “They recommended that all second graders in the future get to attend. For some kids, they had no idea all these local government jobs existed. It was hands-on and engaging…they didn’t want to leave.” One parent notes, “This year has been my child’s most positive yet. He adores her so much he wishes she could follow him to third grade.”

Inquiry-Based Learning in Action

Laura leans on inquiry-based learning, especially in science, encouraging students to explore and figure things out on their own. “It’s part of finding the hook for each student,” she explains. “Some love science, some love social studies or reading. Getting them motivated is huge.” Her classroom is structured but flexible, with center-based activities where students work together, problem-solve, and learn from mistakes with her guidance.

Balancing Roles and Building Community

As a PTO liaison, Laura represents teachers at evening meetings and connects with families. “It’s nice because I wear both hats—teacher and parent—so I can relate to families in different ways,” she says. She also mentors new teachers and student teachers, describing the experience as mutually rewarding: “I help shape them, but I also pick their brains and get fresh ideas. It’s the best of both worlds.”

Parents also praise Laura’s energy and creativity: “She consistently goes above and beyond, bringing fresh ideas and infectious enthusiasm that inspire students and colleagues alike. Our school is brighter because of her.”

Sparking Curiosity and Maintaining Enthusiasm

Second grade is a special age, she says—students want independence but still need guidance. “I create a classroom environment that sparks curiosity, encourages exploration, and values every child’s voice,” Laura explains. Each school year feels like “Christmas morning,” full of excitement and new challenges. She keeps her enthusiasm alive by refreshing her classroom, trying new ideas, and collaborating with colleagues.

Connecting Learning to the Real World

For Laura, relevance is key. “They always want to know why,” she says. “If they don’t see the connection to the real world, they tune out. I start lessons by asking how it relates to their lives—time, money, reading, writing—so they understand the ‘why’ behind what we’re doing.”Next year, Laura plans to continue Local Government Day and take on new responsibilities as MTSS Lead Teacher, while keeping her PTO and mentoring roles. Her dedication, creativity, and focus on meaningful learning make her a standout in the classroom and beyond.
