Turning Learning Into Adventure
When Laura Krantzโs second-graders walk into her classroom, theyโre not just learningโtheyโre on an adventure. This year, that included a $1,010 grant-funded Local Government Day, which brought Middletown Township officials right to her students. The day ended with a mock town meeting, where students asked questions and explored local government roles firsthand.
โThey loved it,โ Laura says. โThey recommended that all second graders in the future get to attend. For some kids, they had no idea all these local government jobs existed. It was hands-on and engagingโฆthey didnโt want to leave.โ One parent notes, โThis year has been my childโs most positive yet. He adores her so much he wishes she could follow him to third grade.โ
Inquiry-Based Learning in Action
Laura leans on inquiry-based learning, especially in science, encouraging students to explore and figure things out on their own. โItโs part of finding the hook for each student,โ she explains. โSome love science, some love social studies or reading. Getting them motivated is huge.โ Her classroom is structured but flexible, with center-based activities where students work together, problem-solve, and learn from mistakes with her guidance.
Balancing Roles and Building Community
As a PTO liaison, Laura represents teachers at evening meetings and connects with families. โItโs nice because I wear both hatsโteacher and parentโso I can relate to families in different ways,โ she says. She also mentors new teachers and student teachers, describing the experience as mutually rewarding: โI help shape them, but I also pick their brains and get fresh ideas. Itโs the best of both worlds.โ
Parents also praise Lauraโs energy and creativity: โShe consistently goes above and beyond, bringing fresh ideas and infectious enthusiasm that inspire students and colleagues alike. Our school is brighter because of her.โ
Sparking Curiosity and Maintaining Enthusiasm
Second grade is a special age, she saysโstudents want independence but still need guidance. โI create a classroom environment that sparks curiosity, encourages exploration, and values every childโs voice,โ Laura explains. Each school year feels like โChristmas morning,โ full of excitement and new challenges. She keeps her enthusiasm alive by refreshing her classroom, trying new ideas, and collaborating with colleagues.
Connecting Learning to the Real World
For Laura, relevance is key. โThey always want to know why,โ she says. โIf they donโt see the connection to the real world, they tune out. I start lessons by asking how it relates to their livesโtime, money, reading, writingโso they understand the โwhyโ behind what weโre doing.โNext year, Laura plans to continue Local Government Day and take on new responsibilities as MTSS Lead Teacher, while keeping her PTO and mentoring roles. Her dedication, creativity, and focus on meaningful learning make her a standout in the classroom and beyond.
