From Palliative Care to Interior Design: A Pandemic Pivot

Stefanie’s journey took an unexpected turn during the COVID-19 pandemic. As her nominator, Jessica Attanasio, recounts, “When the pandemic hit the U.S. in 2020, Stefanie (Stef) was managing the palliative care unit at a local hospital.” In this role, Stefanie and her team faced the heart-wrenching task of caring for COVID-19 patients in their final days, often facilitating last goodbyes over FaceTime.

Eventually hospital budget cuts led to the layoff of Stefanie and her entire team. Instead of being defeated, Stefanie saw an opportunity for reinvention. “Pandemic layoffs forced a pivot,” she explains. “From hospital social worker to small business owner and interior designer, I built a new career with flexibility to raise my 4 kids & pursue my passion.”

Lilyrose Homes: Where Empathy Meets Design

Stefanie founded Lilyrose Homes, an interior design business that focuses on creating spaces that truly reflect the needs and personalities of local families. Her background in social work has proven invaluable in this new venture. “Empathy & communication (from social work) translated well,” Stefanie notes, highlighting how her previous career has enhanced her ability to connect with clients and understand their needs.

In a few short years, Stefanie has built her business from the ground up, teaching herself everything from billing to social media management. Her unique blend of empathy and creativity has allowed her to create deeply personal spaces for her clients.

Empowering Women in Business

Stefanie is passionate about promoting gender equality in business, particularly in fields traditionally dominated by men. “I imagine our kids grow up in a world where women-owned and women-led businesses are the norm (or the majority!),” she shares. To this end, Stefanie actively collaborates with female artists, carpenters, and painters, challenging stereotypes and inspiring future generations.

Community Involvement and Sustainability

Stefanie’s commitment to her community is evident in her long-standing involvement with Habitat for Humanity. “Longtime Habitat for Humanity volunteer (since high school!),” she proudly states. She regularly shops at Habitat ReStore for vintage treasures, both for clients and personal projects. Recently, she refurbished an antique pantry that was auctioned off at the Hardhats and High Heels fundraiser, showcasing her ability to blend her design skills with community service.

A Safe Space for Family and Friends

Beyond her professional achievements, Stefanie is known for her warmth and generosity. As Jessica notes, “She’s made herself and her home a safe space for all of her kids’ friends.” Her empathetic nature, honed through years of social work, makes her a trusted confidante for many in her community.

Continuous Growth and Learning

Stefanie acknowledges that her journey is one of continuous learning. “Mastering CAD & business ownership is an ongoing learning opportunity,” she admits. Yet, this challenge has led to personal fulfillment: “I’ve never been happier with my life/family/work balance.”

From the demanding world of palliative care to the creative realm of interior design, Stefanie Nemec has navigated significant challenges with grace and determination. Through Lilyrose Homes, she not only pursues her passion but also empowers other women, supports her community, and creates beautiful, personalized spaces for families.
