Susanna Warder – Life as an Enslaved Person at Pennsbury Manor at Gather Place Museum

January 24, 2026 | 2–3 PM First-Person Reenactment: Susanna Warder – Life as an Enslaved Person at Pennsbury Manor
This one-hour program introduces audiences to the life of Susanna Warder, an enslaved woman born in 1701 at Pennsbury Manor, William Penn’s country estate. Her story sheds light on an often-overlooked part of Pennsylvania’s early history—the experiences of enslaved individuals living in Bucks County from the late 1600s through the 1800s.
Drawing on extensive primary research by Mary Ellyn Kunz, Pennsbury Manor’s longtime Education Coordinator, the program honors her decades of work preserving these essential narratives. A Gather Place Museum Reenactor presents a powerful first-person portrayal, exploring the realities of enslavement, daily labor on estates like Pennsbury, and the complex legacy of William Penn and his family.
